7 - The Last One
During the war, food in Germany was very scarce and some people resorted to desperate measures...
The little girl ran along the ruined streets with her small loaf of bread hoping to get home before it started to get dark. At the end of one of the streets, she saw a blind man shuffling along with his white cane. He called to her, hearing her footsteps as she passed, and asked if she would take a letter to his friend for him. She agreed and he gave her the letter, the address and a small sweet for her trouble. As she turned away, he added, 'Be quick now, before it gets dark. She began walking towards the address but, after a moment's thought, turned and ran home instead.
Later she told the police officer, 'How did he know it was getting dark if he was blind?' The police stormed the address on the letter and found the house full of human corpses, wrapped up like meat. They opened the letter and it read, "This is the last one I am sending you today."
